Ethical Principles

The American Psychiatric Association provides ethical annotations for psychiatry based upon the American Medical Association ethical standards. To review these, please download the attached PDF document.

Please note the distinction between standards associated with being a patient for whom all of these safeguards generally apply due to the presence of the doctor-patient relationship, in contrast to an evaluee for an independent examination requested by a third party [forensic examination, IME/IPE, court order evaluations] in which the doctor-patient relationship is specifically not established. In this latter case, confidentiality standards are substantially different as the requesting party legally owns the information within the evaluation rather than the evaluee.
